Acne Q & A

What causes acne?

Acne develops when excess oil produced by glands at the base of hair follicles can’t drain because dead skin cells block the opening. As a result, oil accumulates in the follicle.

The problem worsens when bacteria that normally live on your skin get trapped with the oil. That’s when acne becomes inflamed and swollen.

When should I get professional treatment for acne?

You can consult Dr. Hyun any time you’re concerned about acne and its impact on your appearance. However, it’s important to get professional treatment when over-the-counter products don’t work or when your acne becomes inflamed.

Also keep in mind that what appears to be adult acne may be another skin condition such as rosacea, which worsens without proper treatment.

How is acne treated?

Acne treatment depends on the severity and frequency of your outbreaks. Different types of topical and oral medications are often prescribed to relieve inflammation, eliminate bacteria, reduce oil production, promote exfoliation, or balance hormones.

When you have inflamed, severe, or chronic acne, Dr. Hyun offers another alternative: radiofrequency treatment that stops recurring acne outbreaks.

Using the AGNES® radiofrequency (RF) device and a specially-sized microneedle, Dr. Hyun can precisely direct a beam of RF energy into individual oil glands. As a result, heat produced by RF energy destroys the gland, while the insulated needle protects your skin.

What should I expect during and after treatment?

After applying a local anesthetic, Dr. Hyun targets each oil gland, so your treatment time depends on the number of glands causing your acne. When you go in for your initial consultation, she can determine your individualized treatment. Depending on the severity of your acne, Dr. Hyun may recommend several treatments.

Following RF treatment for acne or blackheads, most patients have mild redness for one to three days. However, you won’t need to take downtime, and you can cover the redness with foundation or tinted moisturizer.

Although you may see improvement within a few weeks, optimal results are noticeable two to six months after your treatment.*
